What is Gastrointestinal ?  

Gastrointestinal (GI) refers to the gastrointestinal tract or system, which includes the organs that process food and liquids. The GI tract includes the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus. The GI system also includes accessory organs like the teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, which produce digestive juices and enzymes. 

The main functions of the GI system are:

• Ingestion and digestion: Breaking down food and liquids into substances the body can use for energy, growth, and tissue repair
• Nutrient absorption: Absorbing nutrients from food and liquids
• Secretion of water and enzymes: Secreting water and enzymes to help digest food and liquids

Cirrhosis, or end-stage liver disease, is a progressive condition that causes permanent scarring of the liver. This scarring can disrupt the liver's normal function of filtering blood from the digestive system, which can lead to gastrointestinal complications:

• Intestinal barrier dysfunction
