Duodenum Disease Treatment
Duodenum Disease Care at Dwarika Hospital, Ahmedabad
At Dwarika Hospital, Ahmedabad, Dr. Avinash Tank and the GI & HPB surgery team evaluate and treat a wide range of duodenum diseases, including duodenal ulcer, SMA syndrome, duodenal perforation and duodenal cancer. Care plans are individualised, using endoscopy, medical treatment and advanced laparoscopic or open surgery where required. (Verify with clinician.)
What is the Duodenum?
The duodenum is the first and shortest part of the small intestine, a hollow C-shaped tube about 10–15 inches long that connects the stomach to the jejunum. It begins at the duodenal bulb and ends at the suspensory muscle of the duodenum. This is the main site where food from the stomach mixes with bile and pancreatic juices, so that chemical digestion can take place.
The duodenum receives partially digested food (chyme) from the stomach and plays a vital role in preparing it for absorption in the rest of the small intestine. Any long-standing disease in this segment can affect nutrition, weight and overall digestive health.
Common Duodenum Diseases Treated at Dwarika Hospital
- Duodenal ulcer (peptic ulcer disease)
- SMA (Superior Mesenteric Artery) syndrome
- Duodenal perforation or post-ulcer perforation
- Benign and malignant tumours, including duodenal cancer
- Inflammatory or chronic duodenitis
Chronic Duodenitis & Evaluation
Chronic duodenitis may lead to changes in the lining of the duodenum, such as gastric mucous cell metaplasia and Brunner gland hyperplasia. In selected patients, endoscopy with biopsy is advised to look for infections (for example Giardia) or other causes, especially in immunosuppressed individuals. Treatment options range from lifestyle and medical therapy to surgery in complex cases. (Verify with clinician.)
