What is the Gallbladder?

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located just beneath the liver. Its main function is to store and concentrate bile — a digestive fluid produced by the liver that helps in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats.

After you eat, especially a fatty meal, the gallbladder squeezes and releases bile through the bile duct into the small intestine to support digestion.

Common Gallbladder & Bile Duct Conditions

  • Acute Cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation due to stones)
  • Gallstone Disease (symptomatic gallstones)
  • Common Bile Duct Stones (Choledocholithiasis)
  • Choledochal Cyst
  • Cancer of Gallbladder
  • Cancer of Bile Duct (Cholangiocarcinoma)

Gallstones & Their Types

The gallbladder stores bile, which is made of water, cholesterol, bile salts and pigments. When the balance of these components is disturbed, solid particles can form and grow into stones (gallstones). Many people have “silent” stones, but when they block the ducts, they cause severe pain and complications.

Cholesterol Stones: These are the most common type. They form when bile contains too much cholesterol or not enough bile salts, causing cholesterol to crystallize and form stones.

Pigment Stones: These are smaller and darker and are made mainly of bilirubin. They are more common in people with chronic liver disease, bile duct infections or certain blood disorders (increased breakdown of red blood cells).

Symptomatic gallstones are usually best treated by laparoscopic cholecystectomy (keyhole removal of the gallbladder) to prevent repeated attacks and complications.

Gallbladder Stone

Gallbladder Stone

Gallstones are hardened deposits that form inside the gallbladder. They can be single or multiple and vary in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. When stones block the cystic duct or bile duct, they cause severe pain (biliary colic), infection or jaundice. The standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones is laparoscopic gallbladder removal (laparoscopic cholecystectomy).

Gallbladder Cancer

Gallbladder Cancer

Gallbladder cancer is an uncommon but potentially aggressive cancer that arises from the inner lining of the gallbladder. It is often associated with long-standing gallstones and chronic inflammation. Early stages may have vague or no symptoms, while advanced disease can cause pain, weight loss, jaundice and loss of appetite. Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy depending on the stage.

Gallstones are hardened deposits of bile inside the gallbladder. When they cause pain, infection or jaundice, keyhole surgery to remove the gallbladder is usually recommended for long-term relief and to prevent complications.

Gallbladder Cancer

Gallbladder Cancer

Gallbladder cancer develops when abnormal cells in the gallbladder grow uncontrollably and form a tumor. Because early symptoms are non-specific, it is often detected late. Treatment depends on the stage and may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
